Lung Transplant

A lung transplant is an advanced surgical treatment in which a diseased lung is replaced with a healthy donor lung. It is considered for patients with severe lung disease when other treatments are no longer effective.

Conditions That May Require Lung Transplant

End-stage COPD
Pulmonary fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis
Severe pulmonary hypertension
Advanced interstitial lung disease

Causes Leading to Advanced Lung Disease

Major Causes and Risk Factors
Long-term smoking damage
Genetic lung conditions
Chronic infections
Autoimmune diseases
Environmental exposure to toxins

Diagnosis

Before lung transplantation is considered, patients undergo comprehensive evaluation including:
Lung function assessment
Advanced imaging studies
Heart function evaluation
Blood tests and infection screening
Psychological and nutritional evaluation

Prevention Tips : Early treatment and disease monitoring can delay progression:

01
Smoking cessation
02
Early management of lung disease
03
Regular medical follow-up
04
Preventing infections through vaccination

Conditions That May Require Lung Transplant

End-Stage COPD

Representing the most advanced stage, airflow obstruction becomes severe. Patients experience persistent breathlessness and reduced oxygen levels. At this stage, long-term oxygen therapy or evaluation for lung transplantation may be considered as conventional treatments provide limited relief.

Pulmonary Fibrosis

In this condition, lung tissue becomes thickened and scarred, making the lungs stiff. This reduces the ability to transfer oxygen. Symptoms include progressive breathlessness and dry cough. Early diagnosis is key to slowing disease progression caused by environmental or autoimmune factors.

Cystic Fibrosis

A genetic disorder causing thick, sticky mucus that blocks airways and traps bacteria. This leads to repeated lung infections and breathing difficulties. While it is a lifelong condition, modern specialized care significantly improves quality of life and longevity.

Severe Pulmonary Hypertension

Characterized by high blood pressure in lung arteries, forcing the heart to work harder. This can lead to heart strain and reduced oxygen delivery. Symptoms include dizziness, chest discomfort, and leg swelling. Immediate treatment is vital to prevent heart complications.

Advanced ILD

As this disease progresses, lungs lose the ability to expand properly. Patients experience worsening breathlessness and dry cough. In these advanced stages, specialized treatments and transplant evaluations are considered to maintain lung function and improve survival.
